Cancellation of Singapore Polyacetal Plant Construction

Asahi Kasei Corporation today announced that its plans for construction of a polyacetal plant in Singapore have been canceled.

In November 1996, the subsidiary Asahi Kasei Tenac Singapore was incorporated in Singapore, and construction of a 20,000 ton polyacetal copolymer plant on Jurong Island (formerly Pulau Sakra) was begun in September 1997.

Construction was deferred in February 1998 in light of the unstable economic situation and severe currency devaluations that occurred. Despite the subsequent economic recovery, demand and prices for polyacetal in the Asian region have failed to recover to a level which would make the new plant viable, and so the decision was made to cancel construction.
