License Agreement on Fasudil for Treatment of Angina Pectoris

Asahi Kasei has concluded a license agreement with Schering AG of Germany for its orally administered fasudil, which holds strong promise for treatment of angina pectoris.

Background and purpose of agreement
The development by Asahi Kasei of fasudil for the treatment of ischemia has led to approval in Japan of an injection formulation for cerebral vasospasm and to clinical trials conducted in Japan of an oral formulation for treatment of angina pectoris.

The injection formulation, trademarked Eril® Injection S, has been approved and is currently marketed in Japan, with sales of approximately 1.3 billion yen in fiscal 2000. Eril® Injection S is indicated for improvement of cerebral vasospasm following surgery for subarachnoid hemorrhage and associated cerebral ischemic symptoms.

Phase II clinical trials have been completed in Japan to confirm the efficacy of an orally administered formulation for the treatment of angina pectoris. In the light of its promise and the related needs for such therapy, the license agreement with Schering AG has now been concluded for its clinical development in Europe and North America.

Essentials of the agreement
Licensed pharmaceutical: Fasudil for oral administration.
Licensee: Schering AG of Germany.
Scope of license: Exclusive development and marketing worldwide except for Japan, South Korea, China, and Taiwan.
Initial program: Advancement of clinical development in Europe and North America for treatment of angina pectoris with fasudil for oral administration by Schering AG.
