Asahi Kasei has concluded a license agreement with Schering AG of Germany for the injectable formulations of fasudil. This agreement complements Schering AG’s rights to the compound’s oral formulations obtained in a separate agreement last year. Under that agreement, Schering is presently conducting U.S. clinical trials in patients with angina pectoris.
Background
With 2001 sales of around ¥1.4 billion, the injectable formulation of fasudil is commercially available in Japan under the trade name Eril® Injection S for the improvement of cerebral vasospasm following surgery for subarachnoid hemorrhage and associated cerebral ischemic symptoms. Having shown efficacy in Phase II clinical trials, Eril® Injection S has entered Phase III trials for the additional indication of acute cerebral thrombosis.
