Asahi Kasei Therapeutics Corporation, the Japanese-based pharmaceutical subsidiary of diversified global company Asahi Kasei, today announced it has expanded its agreement with Swedish Orphan Biovitrum Japan Co., Ltd. (Sobi Japan). The expanded agreement outlines exclusive distribution rights in Japan for the additional indications of primary membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN)-related diseases1 for Empaveli™ (pegcetacoplan), a complement protein C3 inhibitor. Such indications include C3 glomerulopathy (C3G) and primary immune complex-mediated membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (IC-MPGN).

Empaveli™ is a PEGylated peptide that inhibits the function of complement protein C3 and is approved in Japan for the treatment of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). Asahi Kasei Therapeutics has sold Empaveli™ in Japan since September 2023, with exclusive distribution rights from Sobi Japan. Clinical development for additional indications of primary MPGN-related diseases in Japan is currently being advanced by Sobi Japan.

Asahi Kasei Therapeutics looks forward to conducting sales and marketing activities for primary MPGN-related diseases in Japan, if approved.

1 C3G and IC-MPGN are rare and debilitating kidney diseases that can lead to kidney failure.  Excessive deposition of complement and immunoglobulins such as C3 and IgG can lead to kidney inflammation, damage, and failure.
