Asahi Kasei has announced that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has issued a ruling in favor of Koki Ikeda, a member of the company’s athletic team.
Ikeda, a competitive race walker, had been suspected of blood doping, the practice of storing one’s own blood for subsequent autotransfusion to raise performance. On February 14, 2025, the Disciplinary Tribunal of World Athletics sanctioned Ikeda with a 4-year period of ineligibility to compete, as well as nullification of his results and forfeiture of his medals dating from June 20, 2023. Certain of his innocence, Asahi Kasei supported Ikeda’s appeal to CAS.
In its ruling, CAS recognized the validity of Ikeda’s physiological and medical arguments underpinned by substantial evidence. The ruling overturned the sanctions of the Disciplinary Tribunal, restoring his former results and medals, and allowing him to resume competition immediately.
“It’s extremely gratifying to have my innocence recognized at last,” said Ikeda. “I’m deeply grateful to everyone who continued to believe in me, and never stopped lending me their generous support. I look forward to resuming competition so I can repay my debt of gratitude with results.”
Asahi Kasei has stated that it fully supports valid measures to ensure the integrity of international athletic competition, including the elimination of all forms of doping. The company believes that athletes erroneously accused of wrongdoing must be afforded adequate procedures to establish their innocence without being unduly sanctioned.
